Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.

See me for car, home, life

and health insurance.

"People can't spend their whole life trying to improve the image of a community. They've got to get through their own lives somehow."

Quentin Crisp

But it's amazing how other people, from strangers to friends, seem to recognize and want to make you know that you are different.

I saw the musical Tommy the other nightthe loudest show in the whole world-and when Tommy is cured and could hear, all he wants is to be like other people. Of course, when I was young and at home I really didn't think about the difference between "me" and "them." But I did in school of course. I was immediately recognized as a hopeless case and this was long before I ever plucked my eyebrows or painted my fingernails or any of that rubbish. Even the other boys at school who liked me said "Do you have to stand like that? Can't you put your hands down!" And I thought, "Why, why, why am I always in the wrong?" But they were right; my hands are always up in the air (raises his arms to the ceiling).

Do you think you could find your place at a gay pride event?

Well you see, that's another thing: you can't be proud of being gay because it's not something that you've done. You can't be proud of having red hair unless you've dyed it and then spent all afternoon saying, “Look at this."

Don't you think that gay pride lets us take back how others have told us we're

different: we're going to tell you before you tell us?

I think that you have to be yourself and to try to give as little offense to other people. You see, gay people want to be accepted for their homosexuality. You can only be accepted in spite of your homosexuality. You can't go around saying, “I'm queer as a coot-isn't it marvelous?" because people will say, "Actually, it's a bit embarrassing." You have to accommodate people as far as

you can.

And through that you'll make yourself happier because you're accommodating others?

I think you can accommodate the world and be yourself at the same time. But of course my conversation is full of sweeping statements, all of which have been prefaced with the words, "I live an urban life." I have never lived in a village my whole life and I hope that I never shall. In big cities you do as you please and in America, if people don't like something about you they don't mention it, or if they do they praise it.

In the beginning of the film, Orlando is said to want company, not privilege.

It has never been a sustainable aim of mine for privilege. What makes me comfortable is other people, but you have to be alone sometimes to recharge your batteries.

Do you have a message for all gays, lesbians or bisexuals?

Neither deny nor confirm; just live your life.
